Cal Poly Design Village 2008

Frequently Asked Questions

May we build parts of our structure ahead of time?

Absolutely. Most teams build wall pieces or intricate detail pieces beforehand; however, bear in mind that Poly Canyon road narrows at points to about 9 feet, and you will be hauling your pieces at the same time as everyone else.

What's the site like?

Design Village grounds contain areas that are fairly flat and continue up to the top of the first hill visible from the mouth of Poly Canyon Road. While your teams may want to take advantage of the flat ground, judges will take into account the use of more challenging topography.

How's the weather?

Who knows? Past Design Villages have withstood downpours, extreme wind, and temperature lows in the upper 30s; droughts can make the ground extremely difficult to puncture; there will be dirt, tall grasses, and there may be mud. However, most days bring sunshine with wind breezes during mid afternoon.

What about wheels for hauling our structure up the road?

Wheels are allowed for transport on one condition: that all parts of your transportation except for the wheel itself are incorporated into your structure. This means that if you have a platform with wheels attached to it, the platform must be part of your structure as well as the platform-to-wheel connection pieces; the only part that may be separate is the round wheel itself.

If you choose to use wheels, they must be in plain view during judging.

Also, bear in mind that Poly Canyon Road has slight bends, curves, and hills, so you will need to maneuver your structure accordingly.

Can I bring my bicycle up for the weekend?

Yes. Human Power is the only type of fuel allowed for personal vehicles up and down Poly Canyon Road, so your bicycle would be a great way to get around Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo for the weekend; however, it can only be used to haul your structure and supplies if the frame and mechanics are incorporated into your design.

Do we have to hand carry our structure out on Sunday, too?

No. After the awards ceremony, the gate will be opened and you may bring a vehicle into the canyon to remove your structure. Please remember that horses, livestock, and educational groups use Poly Canyon throughout the year—be sure to collect all of your belongings, trash, etc. when you leave.

Can I drive up Poly Canyon Road at night or during the weekend?

No. Design Village gets special permission and an access code during Open House weekend for our own vehicles, but general vehicles are not allowed on Poly Canyon Road (with the exception of Sunday afternoon).

Why should I bring my own dishes?

Design Village has historically promoted sustainable practices, which materialize in several dimensions of the event including food, transportation, structures, and judging. Those participants who support this mission by bringing reusable plates and silverware will be rewarded with an express pass through all food lines for the entire weekend. Washing station will be available.

What's the showering situation?

Showers are available in Mott gym during gym hours (7 AM-11 PM). We will provide shuttle service to and from the showers in the mornings and evenings.
