Cal Poly Design Village 2008
Competition Rules
Rules
- NO BLUE TARPS! Get creative and use another skin for your structure.
- Maximum 10 teams or 60 students per school.
- Team size will be strictly enforced, 2-6 members only! Every structure will be judged on its own merits.
- Poly Canyon is full of experimental structures built by Cal Poly thesis students. Design Village competitors may not incorporate these into their own structures.
- A presentation board must accompany your structure. This presentation is critical to convey your team's concepts and intent. Your team's presentation board should include: team # (designated when you receive your registration confirmation email), school name, structure name, total cost, and concept.
- All participants must check in by the lower gate to Poly Canyon Road at the kiosk. You must sign the waiver form before you enter the canyon.
- Participants are not allowed into the canyon with structural material until the gates are opened Friday morning, and every team member has checked in.
- Structures must be hand carried along Poly Canyon Road to the canyon site, approximately one mile. Any device used to transport your structure must be incorporated into the design and be propelled by human power. This goes for personal belongings as well.
- Your team sites are selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
- The site may not be altered (no grading permitted) although you may flatten down any tall grass or reposition any rocks found in your site. No excavation is allowed, but stakes or poles are permitted. Please remove any stakes during teardown.
- You may assemble your structure anywhere within the designated boundaries of the site. Refer to the contour map of the canyon for this information.
- There is no size limitation to your site or structure, but be sensible with the verticality of your design. Wind gusts in the evening can be extremely high.
- Guy wires, ropes, or any tension lines used to support your structure must have flagging that is visible at night. Failure to flag tension lines or injuries resulting from other participants tripping on your lines will be a negative mark when judging. The Design Village Staff may order you to dismantle your structure if there is a threat to the safety of other team members.
- No power outlets will be provided of any sort. You are permitted to bring your own batteries or solar power source, but no gas-powered generators.
- Structures must be completed by sundown on Friday. Afterwards, only fine-tuning of craftsmanship, structural, or aesthetic, is permitted.
- No personal campfires, BBQs, generators, gas-fired lanterns, or camping stoves are permitted (though a public bonfire will be initiated by Design Village staff). There is a high risk of fire in Poly Canyon. Be careful when you smoke. Violators can immediately be disqualified and asked to leave without refund of fees.
- Any team using prefabricated tents will be disqualified.
- Structures must house the entire team for the duration of the event, Friday and Saturday nights. Failure to comply forfeits any awards received.
- Team members must be present during judging on Saturday from 10:00AM to 2:00PM (time may be extended depending on the number of structures).
- Dismantling structures may not begin before 8:00AM Sunday morning.
- Absolutely no cars are allowed into Poly Canyon until after the awards ceremony Sunday morning. Campus police are notorious for citing and towing cars along the road. Shuttles will be available throughout the weekend for your use. The use of bicycles are allowed and encouraged.
- “Pack it in, Pack it out”. Please help by cleaning up all trash in and around your structure and removing stakes and guy wires from your site before leaving the canyon on Sunday.
- All Federal, State, and University Laws and Regulations apply during the event. Specifically, NO ALCOHOL OR DRUGS. Failure to comply will result in immediate disqualification without refund of fees, and may jeopardize your school's eligibility to participate in future competitions.
- Have fun!
Tips and Suggestions
- In past years, we have experienced extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind. Take this into consideration when designing your structure.
- Design your structure with lightweight materials in mind. Remember, you have to carry your structure one mile along the Poly Canyon Road.
- Poly Canyon Road is not paved. There are many dips and bumps in/on the road surface.
- There is a water station at the halfway point of Poly Canyon Road.
- For everyone's safety, remember to bring a flashlight.
- There will be no electricity or power sources provided, which means there is no electrical source to plug in your cell phone chargers.
